Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  Use Santa Strategy to Move Past Overwhelm

On occasion, we have difficulty focusing on one particular project when many are in the mix. Other times, we have a simple idea that needs to be expanded, yet we don’t know where to begin. Even worse, we attempt to dismiss the entire idea.

The same applies to advancing a career, or whether to interview for a job beyond current capabilities.  These circumstances may be viewed as projects.

The dilemma brought to mind the song about how Santa works:

“He’s making a list, and checking it twice…”

My Story

A bold idea has been brewing in my mind. Stops and starts have been a part of the process. Some days I saw it as too challenging. On those days, I would tell myself, “forget it”. Yet, on other days, I saw real possibility in store.

The real problem was over-thinking it. I didn’t know where to begin and made it more complicated than it needed to be. In my mind, the many components need to be well thought out to be delivered without incident. Plus everything needs to function well together. On good days, I was motivated to get the project right in every aspect in order to draw a wider client appeal.

Thankfully, I mustered up courage to continue with the entire idea. It is now close to being completed.

Trusted Peers

My original project to-do list included a limited number of items that would comprise a new service. There was no doubt that I needed the input of trusted peers. My definition of “trusted peers” is that I know their feedback, positive or negative, will be honest. If there are areas of improvement, they will give good indication of how to go about it. And when my friends approve something, I know it will have an excellent chance for succeeding.

Tweaked

My original brief listing took on a new look after the initial feedback was received. The first itemized list was re-ordered. Explanations were written in the form of of one short paragraph for each item. Instead of two categories, three were created. The final task was to add more services to all three categories.

Stamp of Approval

The second check list was sent to the same trusted friends. Expecting a week-long turnaround, I was shocked when an email was received within the hour. My second attempt for the list received high accolade. I was given the green light to move full steam ahead. The only chore now is to fix grammatical error and then bring the project to life.

Your Story

Are you mentally wrestling with an idea not knowing which direction to take? You might consider a similar approach to the one above. For the first list create a two column document. Under the headers of ‘for’ and ‘against’, list the reasons for each as you see them today. Next, add a new category beneath those entitled ’project in motion’. Under this title, list positives and negatives as you forecast whether it will be worthy of your time and effort.

Analyze

Stand back to consider everything you listed. Do the positive reasons for moving forward outweigh the negative? Should the answer be ‘yes’, then begin listing everything that needs to be in place. Next, have your trusted friends take a look to see what might be tweaked for a well thought out plan.

Check Your List Twice

Accepting the feedback you receive, revitalize your initial plan. The extra insight is similar to injecting adrenaline into it. You become more motivated to see it through to completion.

Once your project is complete, it’s time to begin the marketing/branding program to let everyone know about it. Be certain to include why you created it along with the benefits you believe it will bring to your clientele.

Checking your list twice or even three times will greatly enhance results. Create it and curate with care.

Sales Tips:
  1. Think each project through for commitment required from start to finish.
  2. Determine where help may be needed.
  3. Go through the exercise of listing pros and cons for proceeding.
  4. Should you decide to move forward record the steps needed in a simple list.
  5. Look at the long-term, does the project have potential of being well accepted?
  6. Exchange ideas with your closest peers.
  7. Accept positive and negative feedback.
  8. Carefully examine feedback from multiple perspectives.
  9. Determine which feedback most closely aligns with your plan.
  10. Implement what aligns well to improve the overall project.
