Going Against Conventional Wisdom

The first question asked of me on a radio show was,

“How do you feel about business plans?”

That question brought a big smile to my face.  As a new entrepreneur, I was told by very savvy women that I absolutely, under no uncertain circumstances, had to have a business plan before starting out. That pronouncement brought a blank stare from me.

My own experience was going to my local chamber of commerce network event for the very first time to announce I was a sales trainer.  I was hired on the spot, and then again, and again.  That was my business plan starting out.  Of course, times and circumstances change including politics, economy, and technology.

However, the point is when you are new at business, how on earth would you know what will work and what won’t?  My opinion is you have to experiement first to truly determine what your clientele needs, wants and deeply desires before you can put a realistic and actionable plan together.  The show host agreed whole-heartedly, and laughed that until we spoke, she was alone on this line of thinking too.

Should you be a seasoned business person, a flexible plan should be in place due to all the changes that come at us.  For instance, CDs and pictures of CDs aren’t as valuable as they once were due to new technology.  Strategies for reaching new audiences continually change.

The best suggestion is to maintain a positive mindset open to new possibility for business development at all times.  The same applies to job seekers trying a variety of strategies to obtain interviews.  In the end, those who are rigid do not do as well as those who are almost camelion-like.  As others see you surviving and thriving, they recognize you are building a formidable brand.

Flexibility and openness help you to grow more quickly and achieve more than thought possible, and will lead you to the Smooth Sale!
