Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  How we Communicate Repels Or Attracts Our Audience

The goal for all business development should be to communicate as if we are magnets. We want to attract the right job or clientele. But sometimes mishaps occur. It is how we react that will make all the difference.

We all make errors; accept this to move forward on a positive note.

My Story

It is very common for misunderstandings to occur now and then. On some days they occur more frequently than we’d like to admit. Yesterday was one of those days.

After a great conversation with the CEO of a company, I was referred to “Sue”. She unfortunately took ill and so referred me to “Jim”. This is where the disconnect began – big time.

Ask for Help

The recap of the long drawn-out story is that frustration grew on both sides as responses were not coming forth. With sales in my blood, I wrote the CEO to ask for help. His response was immediate, yet Jim seemed to have disappeared. Thankfully, Sue returned to the thread of email to become the conductor of communication.

Delete Blame

Once frustration sets in, anger usually follows. We think of all the reasons why the other party is to blame. After examining the activity, I realized the difficulty was most likely due to an email blocker.

Change Focus

When our goal is to create an alliance, gain a new job, or make a sale, blame and anger only serve to defeat the purpose. The improved decision is to focus on the greater good. This comes across by maintaining a smile on your face and humor in your voice. Encourage laughter when you are finally able to make the connection.

Finally, Jim and I did connect. Jim immediately began to admit he was at error. I quickly said “it takes two…” This was followed by saying I was very happy to finally connect. We had a personal chat and then proceeded with the demo. By the end, I was incredibly impressed by what he shared, I volunteered to share the information myself in due time. Our conversation finished on a very high note.

Your Story

Think back to similar incidents and how they were handled.

Did you:

  • Get angry and remain angry?
  • Report the person to their manager?
  • In the moment, did you decide to not give further consideration to the person?

Should any of the above be the case, think about whether an opportunity was missed. And if this was the case, begin thinking about how you might improve your response the next time a miscommunication takes place.

In the future when mishaps occur, take a deep breath in order to fix the issue. At the very least, make sure everyone is comfortable. Look to to the reason for the original purpose of the connection and the bigger picture. If it excites you, work diligently to resolve the problem.

Sales Tips:
  1. Delete blame from your mindset.
  2. Breathe deeply to let anger subside.
  3. Create a plan of action to fix misunderstandings.
  4. Ask for help when facing a dead-end.
  5. Review all the attempts to figure out where the misstep took place.
  6. Upon connecting, wear a smile.
  7. Joke about the miscommunication.
  8. Move forward as if only good occurred.
  9. Exchange information as originally promised with an eye on the greater good.
  10. Enjoy the conversation.
