We have all seen many styles of leadership and have our preferences. However, some leaders ignore that leading is not an ego-centric role but working on behalf of many. The extra step is encouraging others to grow into their unique style for leadership roles.  

Business owners of any size or entrepreneurs must realize that branding and marketing are attached to one’s unique style of conducting themselves and the business. The sales realization is that people typically do not merely purchase a product or service; they research the company and person’s reputation upfront for more complex purchases. How one conducts oneself in all regards dictates the title. Successful leadership includes more than skills.

My Story

The question, ‘What are you thinking?’ comes to mind for varying and essential reasons. Mindset is the first critical aspect of leadership. Corporate sales taught me the best lesson – ‘how not to lead!’ It was entirely egotistical, clearly putting in order the people who mattered vs. those who did not and laying out ‘the rule of the land.’ 

If one was not a favorite person of the person in charge, they may as well have worked remotely long before the concept was known. Hence, my enjoyment in sales was being with my prospects and official clientele. The bonus is that most of my day was spent that way, so I became the top producer to everyone’s angst.

  • Motivating and inspiring others to grow and lead
  • Integrity

Today’s Workforce

When you recall treatment in previous years and read today’s news about staff disrespect, it’s no wonder there is so much ‘quiet quitting’ and people preferring to work remotely. The turnover is close to being a silent epidemic, which puts more pressure on management, which then passes the pressure along with undesirable rhetoric to their staff.

Turnaround Time

For those in leadership positions, it’s time to reckon with oneself. Consider all those who report to you and the percentage of those seemingly unhappy plus those quietly quitting. If the numbers are higher than what is acceptable, the time is today to begin altering harmful patterns that are creating the issues. 

Change or Not to Change – To Be or Not to Be A Leader

Modeling good leadership requires the willingness to improve oneself to empower those following our lead. As with any desire to attain the next level, it’s critical to continue figuring out how one may improve their efforts. Even top management of large corporations isn’t always the model of perfection. With the technological changes coming to us so quickly, creating an inclusive environment for more people to contribute their ideas and feel rewarded for doing so is vital.

For many, leading a company or people reporting to them is beyond their desired responsibility. Sadly, they may discourage you from attempting a leadership role if that’s what you want. The best starting point is to confirm what you truly desire and then plan how to take your career to the next level and the next…

Some people desiring to lead but lack confidence will do well in taking a public speaking class. It enhances public speaking and one’s confidence without ego. The next related point is to check your ego at the door to concentrate on learning in every way imaginable:

  • Classes
  • Experiences of all types
  • People you encounter and with whom you work 

Most of all, be welcoming of all ideas because you never know what the next one may be. Although many may not suit your program, be courteous in hearing them out, as a golden nugget may be hidden within it. If not, explain diplomatically why you prefer not to proceed so that a deeper understanding may be passed along. Finally, when an excellent thought is presented, thank the person, implement it, and provide a bonus to reward the provider for the idea, proving it works well.

In Conclusion: Successful Leadership Includes More than Skills

The overall essential goal is to work on behalf of the greater good. In the case of becoming an admired leader, it’s necessary to become familiar with what your reports desire for their goals to encourage, motivate, and help achieve them. Doing so will boost you into the admired leadership role. Next, continue serving your reports well and spreading goodwill in efforts such as community service.
