The Route You Choose
After the fact, I realized that the route you choose might need a swift analysis. Upon agreeing to write an article for another, the research requirement had my head in a spin. It would have been far easier to decline the opportunity. Trust me, I was very tempted to do so, but then I had a stern talk with myself.
Any accountant will tell you that for every endeavor you need to look at your bottom line. Business advisors will tell you to always concentrate on your top three monetary producing activities. But you also need to do the work you enjoy most and consider the journey you are on giving due consideration to what will bring the ultimate best reward.
Pros and Cons
Weighing the options, I quickly recognized that declining to write was the worst option possible. Being in business mean you want your clientele to know they can count on you. Taking the easy route wouldn’t work in this case and might harm future opportunities for working together.
Some situations requiring extra time be spent do not necessarily negatively affect your bottom line. In fact, the opposite proves to be true when the research required increases your knowledge. And more than that, when your clientele sees you putting in the extra effort on their behalf, they know you are the right person for the job. Reciprocity takes hold when recommendations to their friends and peers are made on your behalf.
Reward
The crowning glory comes when you may take the newfound knowledge to enhance what you already know and apply it to future endeavors. Ultimately, you come out way ahead by digging in to learn what is required to complete the project. To provide a snippet, I learned a lot about the complexity of marketing today and how it may positively or negatively affect sales and the company bottom-line. Newer software exists to verify, cleanse, and automate incoming data. For larger companies this has become a requirement.
Yes!
My advice has always been to make it a habit of saying Yes! when exciting opportunities come your way. It’s a good thing I followed it this time around. On occasion, you may need help from a mentor. The investment will pay off handsomely. I know because I’ve followed this advice as well.
Enjoying Life
It’s great to relax and get the most enjoyment out of each day. But on the unique days where you have to scurry to research, digest, and apply new information that requires putting in longer hours than you would like, the reward comes later knowing you not only did a good job, but the right job. This holds true for any career or business endeavor.
