Attract the Right Job or Clientele:
You are the one to fix your problems
Admittedly, there are times when I would appreciate the help of others to fix occasional problems. However, deep down, we all know that each of us represents the one person, who knows all aspects of the problem in question, and is therefore best suited to find the fix. This applies to all areas of life, job, career, entrepreneurship, and personal.
Dilemma
A friend and I each recognized that our own articles, posted by a third party, failed to give due credit. In my case, the article was edited a bit, but nevertheless, the verbiage is mine. In my friend’s case, it was a place of employment long ago. Not being an attorney, I’ll say, “It is my understanding that the written word is automatically copyrighted” in the United States.
Friendly Negotiation
Whenever attempting to fix a problem, it is always best to begin the dialogue in a friendly manner. In my case, I would begin by saying, “I noticed an oversight on the posting of my article.”
The important piece is to listen carefully for the other person’s response. Should it sound reasonable, then ask for their ideas for a quick fix and share your ideas, too. Both perspectives will more readily find agreement. Be certain to request a date for it to be finalized.
Unfriendly Response
In the event the other party acts as if it’s your tough luck, you then need to consider the rank of that person. Should it be anyone but the CEO or President, you then have the maneuverability to proceed to the highest level in the organization.
Top Level Executives
Upon communicating with the executive, start from the beginning using the friendly negotiation approach. Briefly explain what occurred, and suggest your ideal solution. Executives are busy and so it is in their best interest to correct the situation, to your preferred outcome. This way they can get back to seemingly more important matters.
Resolve
On occasion a lack of response will be seen. Consider all of the alternatives such as a poor Yelp review, legal action, or simply walking away. Each of these carries consequences. The decision is yours as to which you can most easily live with plus not damage your reputation or personal brand.
Future
These incidents become valuable lessons. We learn the required steps to be put in place to protect ourselves prior to taking action. In fact, just today someone offered a new venture that on one hand sounded extremely generous and trusting of me. On the other hand, should anything go wrong down the road, I could foresee I would be in a heap of trouble. An alternative route was suggested.
Approaching problems with an analytical approach will save you much grief and will more quickly get you to the Smooth Sale!
