Attract the Right Job or Clientele:
Six Tips to Communicate As An Equal
By the time we have built our credibility it seems as if we still need to prove ourselves prompting the six tips to communicate as an equal. But every once in a while people mistakenly assume that they are above you and I and see the need to let us know.
The problem rests in the erroneous assumption. In most scenarios questions produce the right answers while assuming usually proves to be false. Such was my recent experience when another made a number of false assumptions about my experience versus the importance of his.
I have learned to patiently educate the person making boisterous statements and false assumptions, and do so with a smile. The hope is that the more gentle approach will encourage the person to behave differently in the future. My experiences are the groundwork for the 6 tips to communicate as an equal.
Agree Upfront and then Communicate As An Equal
While this may seem contradictory to where I am headed, the agreement settles everyone down. Agree that the person’s experience is impressive. But at the same time, share where you have similar experience and the strides you have made.
Just the Facts
Accomplishments will be stated in a way that no one else could possibly match them. In this case, factually state yours but use a very calm and nonchalant voice. The person will stop in their tracks.
Raise it a Notch: Communicate As An Equal
Without boasting match what the other person just boasted about but do so factually. For example, if you heard him brag that he had 25,000 followers on Pinterest but you have a higher number of connections on LinkedIn, share the similar activity. But then factually state the number of followers you have earned on the other site that outnumbers his total. That leaves the person to wonder about you. Similarly, if you earned recognition for your work, let that be known too.
Value
Should the other person brag about his finding the sweet point for selling a product at a low price in order to increase the number of units sold, patiently wait until he finishes. Explain why a low-ball fee wouldn’t work for the caliber of service you offer. In a matter-of–fact manner reveal why you focus on selling value along with the overall benefit this brings. In this manner, others realize that you do communicate as an equal.
Credibility
While it is best to not have to communicate in this manner at all, sometimes we are put in front of others unexpectedly. It is our duty to stand up for ourselves. If you were to let all of the remarks directed at you disappear without addressing them, it would demonstrate you agree that you lack confidence and equal status.
As an entrepreneur or someone dedicated to your career, you cannot afford to allow anyone to speak in a demeaning manner toward you.
Be Assertive and Communicate As An Equal
In addition to credibility, your personal brand is at stake. If you do not stand up for yourself to be counted, who will?
By diplomatically sharing your credentials you will be speaking with authority and establishing connections with those who most appreciate you. In each circumstance, it is essential to communicate as an equal.
