3 Business Lessons from the Fad Diet Industry

You are in business to make money, enjoy your work, and know that you are contributing something valuable, but are curious about how the 3 business lessons from the fad diet industry may apply. The prospect of not succeeding is something no one wants to face. However, as we move forward with trial and error, and learn from those lessons, the game and the motivation remain on track.

  1.  Is your business viewed as a fad?

The history of frozen yogurt in a nutshell is that once upon a time everyone on the planet seemed to be eating it. The yogurt parlors were everywhere! Seinfeld devoted an episode to the fact that it was delicious, but Elaine was beginning to put on weight from eating it.

Realizing weight gain, the yogurt parlors closed and were hard to find for a long time. A few years ago, frozen yogurt made its return to popularity. But now we are reading that eating it is less healthy than eating ice cream. Is this the demise ahead?

2.   Bacon, Hot Dogs, Cured Meat, Charcoal grill – the American diet

Most people grew up with these meats and today still love them. In fact, there was a fad diet that said in order to lose weight, you can eat as much bacon as you like. I knew one person who followed this instruction. Unfortunately, a visit to his doctor with weight gain instead of loss had him hearing this directive, “If you don’t stop this nonsense diet, you will die of a heart attack very shortly.” And this week it was revealed that the meat is contributing to cancer.

  1.  Eat Your Veggies

Learning to eat healthy makes us strong. Likewise, instead of going for just the latest and greatest strategies in business, be certain the core of your business model comes from a place of strength as in being healthy and long lasting. Then, as appropriate add the advanced technology features.

Business Lesson: Build a strong foundation that is flexible for future growth.

Every step of the way, keep reminding yourself of why you began your business or career, and what you hoped to bring to the table. Focus on your grandest vision and keep achieving the milestones to get there. Should you be a job-seeker, be discerning on interviews as to what the business model may actually be.  Operating in this manner, will earn you the status of a long-term successful business or career.
