Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Are You Spreading Holiday Cheer?

On the one hand, we get excited about attending parties at the end of the year and rejoicing with good friends, it’s sometimes questionable whether we are spreading holiday cheer. There may be a bit of the“bah humbug” feeling on occasion due to the pressure of time and monetary commitments.

Your frame of mind predicts your outcome.

My Story

For the occasional, I “have to” attend a less than desired function, I approach it as a sale by reframing my perspective. I tell myself the following:

  • A new friend may be found
  • A business counterpart might be introduced
  • I will have a good time!

If I were to approach the event as a time-waster, it would dissuade anyone from speaking with me.  However, by mentally preparing for a good time, enthusiasm comes across and encourages a friendly dialogue allowing for spreading good cheer.

Sales/Interview/Party Preparation

We prepare for client meetings and job interviews by gaining understanding of interests ahead of time. Time and money is a consideration for these events too.  Just as you might dress in your best professional outfit for an important interview or sales meeting, wear your favorite party attire. Take one last look in the mirror to affirm you look good! Lastly, tell yourself that you will have a good time. Now you are positioned to do so plus be the one spreading good cheer.

Greeting and Conversation

Upon arriving at the party, thank the host for having you and offer your thoughtful gift. Attempt to meet numerous guests throughout the evening. This will increase your odds for becoming acquainted with those you wish to meet. Lead the conversations with questions such as, “Do you have special plans during the holiday season?”

Good Manners with Food

Have you ever witnessed someone who seemingly takes control of one dish at a buffet table? It’s usually because they don’t have the confidence to mingle. Help yourself to food and then move away to allow space for someone else.

Should everyone be seated at tables to enjoy the food, monitor their speed of eating. You want to fit in somewhere in the middle for finishing the food on your plate. And if you aren’t certain which glass is yours, pause for a moment for someone else to take the lead.

Saying Goodbye

As you leave the event, thank the host for a wonderful evening, and wish them a wonderful holiday season. On appointments, thank people for their willingness to meet with you during the holidays. Ask everyone you encounter their plans, and as you depart, give your best wishes for the holiday and New Year.

Follow-up

Your next interaction in the New Year should begin with, “How was your holiday?” This puts a positive frame of mind on your follow-up meeting and is likely to lead you to the Smooth Sale!
