Advocate Sales on Interviews

Every company needs to continually increase sales or they will most likely find themselves out of business.  In this frame of mine, no matter which line of work you are in, you are a salesperson.  This is true if you meet with clients or work with other employees.  Conversation, exchange of idea, and motivating one another are all aspects of salesmanship.

Should you accept this theory, take time prior to your next interview, to contemplate how you actually might impact sales.  Why and how would performing well in the available position you are about to interview with impact the company?  This takes a bit of creativity, but once you have some answers, give them further thought.

You might be a bookkeeper whereby the position requires little client contact, however, you would connect with people inside the company.  Meeting your goals, promptly answering questions, and making expert suggestions make you the salesperson of your job.  In another capacity, system engineers are fairly technical, yet they are frequently required to meet with clients.  The ability to teach clientele how to use new systems, with a smile on your face, will put you in a league of your own and have clients requesting your presence.

As you interview and encounter many questions, some will be typical and others are meant to see if they are able to throw you off track.  Rather than getting flustered, think about how a salesperson might answer the question as it relates to the position.

My favorite example is being asked whether I would prefer to drive an ice cream truck or be a kamikaze pilot.  Giving this momentary consideration as how it applies to the sales position, I replied “kamikaze pilot”.  Why?  Salespeople need to take risks in order to make the very large sales.

When you accept the fact you need to “sell yourself” (capabilities) on the interview, and practice speaking with confidence, you will find the Smooth Sale!
