Ending Relationships to Begin Anew

Every so often business mirrors real life and today’s tips may be applied in all venues of life:   If at all possible, end the relationship on a positive note to move on in clear conscience and good frame of mind.  It will help you to find an improved match down the road, and perhaps, allow your mind to creatively wander recognizing a match better than ever anticipated.

Examples of how this applies to business and career:

On the interview just prior to agreeing to join the company, Julia asked for a 3-week leave of absence a few months after she was to be employed.  The matter was agreed to but two months into the job, she was notified that her request did not coincide with company policy.  Knowing she would need to seek work elsewhere, and liking people in the office, Julia decided to leave quietly and on a firendly note.  She saw possibility that bumping into some of these folks may occur in the future.

While proposing a computer and software solution to a company, Joel was stunned that the long-time client demanded a short-term lease payment in the same amount that he had previously paid for a long-term lease.  The client let it be known that otherwise he would shop around for a cheaper price.

Joel didn’t want to put he or his team in the position of working at a loss.  So he stood firm and said, “We appreciate your past business and would like to earn future business.  However, we cannot operate at a loss.  I can appreciate your request but cannot fulfill it.  Should you find a less expensive route, think back to the excellence in service received from us.  We have service response time guaranteed in writing.  I advise you ask our competitors if they will do the same.  Should you change your mind, I will be here to assist you.”
