About ten years back, entrepreneurs were advised to build a database having collected all of the contact information of those they met. It was further advised to stay in touch via newsletters. I found the process to be time consuming and costly, so I stayed attune to new ways of doing business. However, I always adhered to remaining in touch with those I met and with whom I synergistically felt a connection.
Today we have social media that is free of charge, as long as you do not advertise or upgrade to premium accounts, and the world is at our fingertips. So how do you build relationships, encourage dialogues and referrals online?
It begins with commenting on posts, sharing the content that speaks to you, and developing a dialogue with the people you admire most. The written communication usually translates to a phone or video call. As you get to know one another, ask how you can also assist one another eg. answering questions, referring to others, and promoting acitivites. Initially, the process may feel strange but as you continue in this direction, it becomes very comfortable. In fact, you teach others to do this and the referrals will come more and more frequently.
