Giving Your Blog a Unique “Voice” Sure to Bring in Traffic
Enjoy Today’s Guest Blog by Cara Aley.
Since your website’s content will remain relatively consistent, your blog gives you the opportunity to further shape and reiterate your business’s voice and personality as far as your customer is concerned. With every post, you have an opportunity to further engage your audience, allow them to connect with you, and allow them to like you more.
The experience is much like when we find a new friend – we are drawn to their interesting stories, unique personality, and the different perspective they can add to our lives. So in finding your blog’s voice, think about what you would want from that new friend.
Talk to your customers as you would to your friends. After all, you are in this together!
Don’t take yourself (and your voice) too seriously.
People have a hard time connecting with someone who’s overly serious all the time. Serious is necessary sometimes, but it’s a bit easier to read lighter subject matter, especially when we are bombarded by so much negativity in the media. Allow your voice to be a breath of fresh air for your audience – something they seek out.
Be honest.
Keep it real with your customer base and nip issues in the bud. That way, they’ll know you are a straight shooter. For example, if you have struggled at all with your online reputation (bad press, negative customer feedback), address it swiftly, and perhaps even with a sense of humor if that is appropriate. Lighten the discourse, but also let your customers know that you are hearing the criticism and want to grow from it.
Your blog’s voice can be a mixture of education and entertainment, just as your conversations with a friend would be.
Educate your customers.
While you are having fun and being honest, it’s cool to let your customers in on information they weren’t aware of that pertains to your business. Are you a clothing company? Let your customers in on what the color palette for the upcoming season is going to be. Are you a shoe company? Let your customers know the latest trends in shoe customization, and that you are looking into that as an option for them. Ask them if they even want you to provide that option.
Customers will like that your ‘voice’ is one that they can look to for interesting and educational subject matter.
Engage your customers.
Ask for their feedback on your posts. Respond to it! Make your blog more community-like so people want to return. Host contests, ask customers for pictures of themselves utilizing your product, ask customers what they’d like to see in a next product and how they would evolve your business so they feel more a part of the process. Let them feel like a friend who can be of use to you!
Your blog’s voice can be the same as the voice or personality you would use in making and maintaining a brand-new pal in real life (if you are good at that!). We always want to entertain our friends, make them laugh, and have them like and respect us. And we always want to be consistent in how our identity comes across to people. Finally, we want our friends to feel as though they are useful to us.
Craft your blog’s voice with all of this in mind.
