Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:
Do You Have Concern About the Sounds of Silence and How to Respond?
Our Blog story asks and offers insights into the question, Do You Have Concern About the Sounds of Silence and How to Respond? Personal incidents and newsworthy events bring back the memory of a well-crafted song sung by Simon and Garfunkel, ‘The Sounds of Silence.’
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
When we remain still and quiet, we can realize the intricacies of everything happening around us. The question then becomes, do we contribute to the sounds of silence, or do we take action?
My Story
At a young age, I realized that bullies have their weak spots. Encountering a situation where the male bully has massive physical muscle, but the female does not, she can stand tall and use her mental strength to overtake and enjoy a better outcome. It’s not nonsense because I was trained to do it many times over in my personal, business, and life situations.
Stand up, stand tall, and do what is right!
When we attempt to conduct a team effort and take pride in listening to all perspectives, the sounds of silence can occasionally take over, making for an awkward situation.
Examples of Sounds of Silence Producing Awkward Moments
- Disagreement can produce conflict.
- Out-of-the-ordinary facial expressions or gestures.
- There is a need to improve what is on the table with the correct choice of words. Many dilemmas exist simply in wondering how to approach the following diplomatically:
Bravery Steps In and UP!
- Diplomacy
Stepping in and up isn’t easy as we want to avoid harming the blossoming relationship. For some, it takes a brave moment to tell another that something isn’t quite right and improvement is necessary moving forward. On the other hand, we do a disservice by not suggesting how to improve the effort. The better outcome is to balance being respectful, sharing what may work better, and offering help.
At the heart of the matter is knowing we are striving for better results for all. Most often, the outcome is for the greater good. However, should someone take offense, believing we are wrong without attempting to fix the issue, it probably wasn’t a worthwhile relationship after all.
2. To the Rescue
Richard Fierro is a real-life hero.
Richard Fierro, an Army Veteran, bravely came to the rescue of many at an LGBTQ birthday celebration in a nightclub upon realizing a felon was armed with powerful weaponry. Worse, it was his birthday celebration. Fear drove him to save his friends as he tackled the intruder. Fierro is a hero in every sense, saving many from the mass slaughter of his friends and peers.
Fierro said, “I did it for my family, and at that moment, everyone in that room was my family.”
3. Business Growth
In the highly competitive sales profession, it is nearly impossible to sell anything unless we attempt to gain the other party’s frame of mind, positioning, and goals upfront. We are to put their desires and potential roadblocks front and center before ever attempting to sell a product, idea, or service. The problem for the salesperson is that,
Trust and honesty take time to unfold.
The only way to encourage the outpouring of honesty and trust from a prospect is to sit within our sounds of silence to give our full attention to the other. We must seek clues from facial expressions, body gestures, and positioning. Most importantly, we are to listen for what the person omits from the conversation to make inquiries to gain understanding in full.
On occasion, it does take an act of bravery to question opposing statements and omissions. The better prospect will realize we are doing our duty by asking the right questions. They typically reveal all and request permission to do business with us at that juncture.
The success differentiator is when our prospects realize we are atypical in putting their self-interests first, ahead of ours. Often the first sale is more significant than we anticipate, and they grow in-depth from the starting point.
Your Story: Concern About the Sounds of Silence and How to Respond
Frequently, people shy away from standing up to those attempting to make decisions without input from others or fairness in the approach.
The questions to consider are:
Do you belong to the group?
Are you willing to step up and ask appropriate questions and use a reasonable tone of voice to get the answers?
Or do you allow people to push you aside?
Reconsider past situations where you may have swept something under the carpet to avoid an issue. If thinking about it annoys you somehow, figure out what you may do differently. Repetitive situations will only improve if you (and we) commit to standing up for what is right and best for all.
Changing habits that perform outside your best interests is the first step to advancing your goals. Upon continually witnessing your drive to improve on multiple levels, prospective clients and current clientele will take note to drive an increase in business.
