Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Are You Stepping Into Your Clients’ Shoes to See Their Big Picture?

We frequently hear the age old wisdom, “Don’t judge another until you have walked in their shoes,”  and raises the question ‘are you stepping into your clients’ shoes to see their big picture?’ This most definitely applies to business and career.

However, the saying should go a step further when it comes to working with others and attempting to secure the sale. For improved results, try putting yourself in the mindset of the other person and stepping into your clients’ shoes.

My Story

I was in a retail shop attempting to purchase my favorite candy for a friend. There were two people behind the counter, yet considerable time was spent in line behind just one other person who apparently had a lot on his mind. I finally went up to the register attendant to ask if he could help me. As it turned out he was a trainee and could not help on his own.

It was an unusual situation that had me waiting 15 minutes to buy a small box of candy. Normally, I would have left empty handed. On my way out, I was thinking that the trainer, behind the counter, should have at the very least said, “Thank you for waiting in line.” It would have been even smarter to have offered me a small taste as a thank you gesture.

Even worse, I saw a growing line of impatient people. There was no doubt in my mind that much business will be lost if they don’t stop for a moment to consider the mindset of their potential clientele. And they are to embrace the concept, ‘stepping into your clients’ shoes.’

Collaborators

On occasion people may ask you to work on a project together. Should the request pique your interest ask some serious questions. One of best is,

“What is it about my area of expertise that has you asking me to partner?”

By understanding the motivation and perceived outcome, you will be stepping into your clients’ shoes. More importantly, you will know if each is a good match and if the potential will make the effort well- worthwhile.

Career:  Stepping Into Your Clients’ Shoes

You may be presented with an opportunity to seemingly be placed at a higher level. But sometimes the facts are distorted. If you like your present position and wonder why all of a sudden another opportunity is being presented, be certain to ask, “Why?” and gain all the facts. Otherwise, you may have a need to find a new job in the near future.

Sales:  Stepping Into Your Clients’ Shoes

Prospective clients appreciate your admitting what you don’t know in order to learn more. They like hearing tough questions about their problems, the competition, and digging to hear how they see the solution. It becomes another way of stepping into your clients’ shoes. This type of conversation builds credibility and trust. It is key for also building relationships with clientele and securing the sale.
