Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  Keep Promises to Fulfill Desired Results

Throughout the year, we should always follow-up on promises made. But the major holidays occuring in the last quarter may create a time crunch that interrupts good common sense. The last week of the year is the perfect time to review what you “meant to do”.

My Story

A couple of years ago, I had a wonderful interview by a radio show host located in South America. He asked that I join his online group, and I did. Slowly but surely we got to know one another. Then one day, he introduced a friend from his country who moved to the United States.

“Carlos” and I became acquainted with one another in person. I happened to mention that my book, Nice Girls DO Get the Sale, was translated into several languages including Portuguese. He indicated his wife would be interested in the translation.

Unfortunately, I forgot that the translated copies were packed away. But the need to unpack a box arose last week, and to my surprise there was the Portuguese copy sitting on top. I remembered my promise and messaged Carlos that the book would be sent. His response was an even greater surprise. It evidently meant a lot that I remembered and would deliver on my promise.

Other Stories

In my corporate selling days, team members would casually mention that they were “supposed to” research information and get the documentation back to their prospective clients. But they quickly added that it would take too much of their time and it probably wouldn’t matter. I had a hunch it would.

Sure enough, when it came time for making the sale, it never materialized. This mimicked the fact that the promised information never materialized either. The behavior dictated that a new job search was the next requirement.

Sales Excellence

On occasion prospective clients will test whether you are trustworthy. They may make an enormous request or a tiny one. Should the request be unreasonable, state so but offer an alternative idea. And when you commit to a request, extend the deadline a bit longer than you believe it will take so that you may deliver either early or on time. Knowing you may be counted on to deliver promptly fortifies the relationship and builds the sale.
