Stay Winning: Career Tips to Achieve More at Work

The pandemic has affected us in different ways, yet many still struggle to win and can use career tips to achieve more at work. If you’re part of the labor market, you were probably sent home to do your job remotely.

While remote work offers benefits, such as the possibility of a work-life balance, it has its downsides too. The most obvious is how the arrangement might feel as if it’s detrimental to your career. After all, career-building requires face-to-face interactions, among other things, and that’s something you can’t do when most of the meetings you attend are on Zoom. Your network gathering has likely stalled. 

However, you have it in you to steer the situation toward a more favorable direction. Here are tips to achieve more in your career despite present circumstances. 

Establish trust and camaraderie with colleagues

You cannot force people to trust you. Nor can you force camaraderie with the people with whom you work. It requires effort on your end, and it starts with respect. Regardless of the organizational hierarchy, show the team members that you acknowledge the importance of their work and value their contributions to the group.

Be respectable as well. Be mindful of how you present yourself to others, from how you communicate to your attire. Lastly, deliver your job expectations with quality and consistency. That’s a surefire way to earn your colleagues’ trust and build camaraderie. 

Make sure you’re a part of an organization that values people development

There are so-called “academy” organizations. The name owes to these organizations’ prioritization of people development. They don’t just see their employees as a means to an end but as integral parts of their business machinery. Their employees’ sustained education and training are vital. 

Suppose you’re looking to shift careers or considering leaving your current workplace to find a new one. In that case, it’s in your best interest to join an academy organization, which is aplenty, especially in the tech industry. Keep learning to ensure you have the appropriate skills to contribute. 

Take initiative

Don’t wait for people to ask you to tag along in their career journey. Be in control of your career. For instance, communicate with your bosses and discuss your career plans. Ask about your career prospects in the organization. Solicit practical advice on how to improve your chances of getting promoted. 

Yes, you can be a go-getter without being obnoxious. And so long as you and the people you work with know you’re a reliable worker, people won’t take it against you if you become vocal about where you want to take your professional journey. 

Mind your work style

You have your unique work style, and meanwhile, your organization has its own work culture. These two must align. Otherwise, it’ll frustrate you to no end that you’re always out of vibe with the rest of the team. 

Be mindful of how people in your organization communicate. Mirror that, without losing your voice. Also, look into how projects assemble and work toward completion. Adjust your work style accordingly. It’s more important to blend in with the group than stand out unfavorably. 

Remain tech-savvy

Even if you don’t belong to your organization’s tech team, be tech-savvy. Think of it as an addition to your skillset. You might not find a use for your knowledge in WordPress now, but eventually, that skill will come in handy. If your superior has a task that requires that specific skill and there’s no one to fill in the role, you can volunteer. That’s great for your resume. Come employee evaluation, your boss will remember.  

Acquire as many relevant skills as you can. Do not limit yourself to those directly linked to your job. By embracing more, you can benefit should you decide to shift careers in the future. 

Self-assess

Do not wait for the typical evaluation to tell you where you’re at in terms of your job. Learn how to self-assess with objectivity. In every task assigned to you, keep a record of how you delivered based on organizational and personal standards. Ideally, those standards reflect each other.  

Upon learning how to assess your work teaches you how to improve in your job. You’ll recognize where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and then you can adjust accordingly. That’s the kind of proactiveness you need if you want to advance in your career.

Your career is one of the most critical aspects of your life. And you can’t allow it to stagnate. Should that happen, your financial plans will be poorly affected, resulting in you not being able to live the life you dream of and deserve.
