“3 Wise Monkeys” applied to career and business

Yesterday, customer service was the topic of the day.  Two experiences had me wondering how the two people were still employed.  And although these were employees, it certainly applies to the level of customer service experience that business owners might improve upon for their own clientele.

The 3 wise monekys said, “See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.”

While waiting in line at a well known hardware store, I could hear the customer ahead of me giving the clerk a difficult time.  After rigning him up, the clerk asked if a receipt was desired. The reply heard was, “No, I won’t be coming back.”

The clerk then took the conversation to the next level with her retort, “I’m glad to hear that!”  Then the clerk looked at us and said, “I’m glad it’s almost 5:00 so I can get out of here!”

Work-wise:  Should you ever encounter a rude hiring manager on an interview or a rude prospective client, politely refuse the job or the business.  But don’t speak badly about that person to future employers or clients as it reflects poorly on you.  In the clerk’s case, it would have been simplest to just remain quiet.

The second incident was an inappropriate response received over the phone due to the other party not listening or understanding what was being said.  In fact, the response made no sense whatsoever.  The current service was discontinued and future services will not be considered.

In the end, how you communicate with one may well determine future repeat business, referrals and testimonials – all leading to the Smooth Sale!
