Can You Afford the Offer?

Many times an offer, whether of a personal, job, or business related nature does not live up to expectations.  Asking questions will help reveal answers as will reflection on past experiences to help fortify your decision.

My first experience with a business lunch where salespeople gathered for a good time away from the office was an eye opener.  Some ordered the most expensive item on the menu while others enjoyed several glasses of alcohol.  Yet, the rest of us were expected to contribute to the bill equally.  It was unfair and taught me to question and how to proceed with future such occasions.

Career wise, some companies are taking advantage of employees when it comes to healthcare.  Given the new laws, they cut their previous policy benefits almost in half not caring about having a healthy and covered staff.  Before you agree to the next job, as you interview inquire as to whether you are expected to buy an iPad, and whether cell phone usage for business and gas for mileage are to be reimbursed.  If you don’t ask, you may be unpleasantly surprised that your new job is too expensive to keep.

Likewise when someone asks to collaborate on a project, be certain it’s in alignment with your current clientele and your values.  Additionally, brainstorm all possible expense involved.  Do you believe 100% the project will be successful, or is it more likely money is being thrown into the air with the hope of a wish come true?  

By asking the hard questions, others see you as a leader in your field, making you even more desirable.  The ultimate benefit of asking is you will be empwoered to make better qualified decisions.  It is the qualification process that leads you to the best of the Smooth Sale
