“We Want Your Opinion…”

Often we are invited by friends and colleagues to provide our opinion on topics that are not quite our areas of expertise.  Worse yet is when you serve on a committee for your specialty, but are asked in front of everyone to provide input on a less familiar topic.  What do you do?

The only answer is, “Do Your Best!”

It does not hurt to state upfront that the topic is not your core area of expertise but that you are willing to provide a layman’s point of view.  And then do you best to give input of how you personallyr react to or connect with that which has been thrown in front of you.

The situation could very well be one of attempting to appeal to a larger clientele.  By providing your every day citizen viewpoint, you will offer insights as to what others see and desire as well.  Your input will give insight on how to communicate best with the desired prospective clientele. This is true as an entrepreneur or en employee.

Another point to consider is, we are each targeted on a daily basis, receiving updated information that perhaps our group may not be privvy to.  One of those email or a recent conversation may coincidentally be helfpul to the question at hand.  The point is, instead of saying “no opinion”, consider everything that has come across your computer in the last month.  You just might find valuable input to share and save the day.
