Building Relationships Creates Success
This week is a perfect example of how and why building relationships is so important and the success it generates. A couple of years ago, I was a vendor at a Western Fairs Association Conference. With permission, some of the associated members began to receive my newsletter while others have also connected through social media.
Late last year, I was asked if I would like to speak at their conference in Reno – where I am today. The request was based upon familiarity with the work I do. I did not have to make a zillion phone calls or twist anyone’s arm – all that was required was for me to answer the telephone and say “YES, I would love to speak on the topic of Negotiation!” Of course we then negotiated logistics and the fact I preferred to add in sales techniques which lead up to the negotiation for a better understanding of how to put it all together.
My relationship building is now moving into business development and marketing-communication. I asked to be allowed in to hear the keynote speaker. To my great enjoyment, a fabulous fire dance show was included in the time allotment just prior to the keynote. On my way in and afterward I chatted with a few of the attendees who expressed interest in my talk.
Next, I will enjoy the floor trade show to see what everyone does, have quality conversations and read some of the literature. My favorite technique to recommend to job seekers remains going to trade shows because many possibilities for your career exist all under one roof!
My purpose in doing all of this is to meet those involved with the organization for a better understanding of what they do prior to my talk. By the time I begin I will have some familiar faces in the session and will be equipped to pinpoint my talk to their needs.
These techniques are the key for you to attract the right job or prospects and clients – connecting with your audience on as personal a level as possible. The rest becomes easy to hear “sold” or “HIRED!” For more information may I suggest two of my favorite books~ HIRED may be found at FedEx Kinko’s, while both are available in major bookstores and on Amazon:

Picking up the telephone receiver to say Yes, is truly a Smooth Sale!
