Do you listen to speakers on single or multiple levels?

When you set your intentions and mindset on what you are going to gain from taking the time to listen to a speaker, you will make far more valuable use of your time. Use it as a learning experience on all levels.

While at the Learning Annex Money Fest Convention, I had the privilege of hearing and watching Suzy Orman speak for an hour. During that time I saw and heard:

1. The manner in which Ms. Orman acknowledges her audience

As a speaker, it is well-worthwhile for me to learn from the more experienced. Suzy went straight to the heart of the matter why people were in attendance – credit card debt. She asked those who were experiencing this problem to please stand up – most of the room stood. The audience immediately understood why there were there and needed to pay attention. It was a fabulous beginning!

2. Much valuable content delivered in the allotted time

Many of us were taking notes for consideration of implementing change toward our financial well-being. It was gratifying to see a well-known speaker deliver supreme value versus the promotional push that so many others do. Instead, Ms. Orman built relationships with her audience at large and thus attracted prospects into becoming new clients.

3. Suzy’s motivation on her journey to success motivated the audience

It was fascinating to hear that until she was age 29, she earned merely $400 per month. Suzy was on the level with her audience – struggling to make ends meet. Then she gained insight she could do better. The audience hung onto every word. I bet some were inspired too!

Most moving was the deal she struck with the television station. She took calculated risks to advance her fame and fortune. She agreed to a terrible time spot on Saturday night when most people are gone, and would only take reimbursement as the numbers of viewers increased. Why? She felt it was imperative to help the public at large.

I came away confirming in my mind that those who are motivated to truly help their clientele, build relationships, and over-deliver on expectations are the ones who become the leaders in their field. The marketing effort is then shared by the public at large. I came away with many learning points in addition to the financial strategies along with much respect for Ms. Orman.

This is the formula (if you need one) for attracting the clientele you desire and closing more sales. It’s a longer journey to get started but far more rewarding when you arrive. Most importantly, once you put the hard work in, all else becomes a Smooth Sale!
