Core Web Vitals and Why Are They Important for SEO?

Core Web Vitals are a set of user-focused metrics introduced by Google in May 2020. These metrics measure a page’s health and help website owners provide a smooth and flawless user experience.

In this post, let’s see what Core Web Vitals are and why they are essential for SEO.

Understanding Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals (CWV) metrics use content loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability.

You can easily see these metrics for your site using the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console. You can also check your website performance in terms of CWV using Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool.

The Three New Core Web Vitals Outlined by Google

Here are the three new Core Web Vitals that Google outlined it will use to assess a site’s user experience score:

  1. Loading: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

The Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) event is a performance metric. LCP shows us how quickly the browser has rendered a page’s content and if there is any work left to do, like loading additional scripts/stylesheets, images, or other resources.

To put it simply, the Largest Contentful Paint implies the average loading time of the primary, meaningful content on a site’s page. The formats could be media or text, or both.

Google will use LCP to determine the speed at which the first meaningful piece of content loads. LCP also indicates the speed at which the main visible content appears.

LCP is scored at the page level. To meet Google’s user experience standards, the content of a page should load in not more than 2.5 seconds.

To improve LCP, make sure to compress your images and serve them in a next-generation format like AVIF or WebP. Aim for image files around 100 KB or less to make sure they load faster.

2. Interactivity: First Input Delay (FID)

The second core web vital that Google highlights for mobile sites are “Interactivity: First Input Delay (FID).” FID is how quickly users can enter content into the website from their keyboard/mobile browser. It indicates whether users can quickly interact with your content.

Google defines this as: “The time between when a user first clicks on the page, and when they can start interacting with the page.”

Examples of interactions could be selecting an option from a menu or entering your email into a field. It is ideal for achieving an FID score of fewer than 100 milliseconds.

So, though FID is a page speed score, it goes beyond and measures the time users take to complete an action on your page.

To improve FID, deliver smaller JavaScript payloads. In this way, browsers will not be forced to carry out too many large tasks. You can also minify redundant JavaScript and CSS.

3. Visual Stability: Cumulative Layout Shifts (CLS)

The third core metric is Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), which measures your page stability while loading.

If you achieve a high CLS score, your images and links have shifted down during site load. It implies that the page elements aren’t visually stable. Imagine how frustrating it is when you try to click on a button, it shifts down the page while loading, and you end up clicking a different button, or worse, an ad.

Some of the common causes of CLS include unoptimized images, embeds, ads, iframes without dimensions, and injecting content via JavaScript.

To improve CLS, scale images correctly and define their sizes so that the browser loading them is certain what size they are supposed to be and, thus, their location.

Why Are Core Web Vitals Important for SEO?

Google is user-centric. The search giant has been doing everything to provide users with the best user experience, from discouraging keyword stuffing to mobile-first ranking and announcing page load time as a ranking factor. In other words, Google is increasingly prioritizing user experience and website optimization, which is also among the top SEO trends. Core Web Vitals are a significant push in that direction and will play a more prominent role in attaining top rankings.

Better user experience is one of the biggest reasons Core Web Vitals are essential for SEO. Faster page load, better user interaction, and visual stability. Users are thus more satisfied and more likely to return and recommend your site to others. Conversely, users are less likely to return if your site has a slow page load speed or is unstable.

Google aims to help site owners build pages that offer a better user experience and not just good content with poor user experience. However, in no way that it implies that you should ignore your site’s content.

As per Google, a good page experience doesn’t supersede having good, relevant content. Nevertheless, if several pages have similar content, page experience becomes crucial for better visibility in organic search.

Crafting good, relevant content and offering an optimized page experience for users should go hand in hand. Only then can you gain a competitive edge and an optimal conversion rate.

That’s a Wrap!

For modern marketers and online business owners to understand what Core Web Vitals are and why they are essential for performing well in search results.

Understanding these key marketing metrics will help you better define your website’s design and performance benchmarks and then identify the steps you can take to maximize the potential of your site concerning both organic rankings and conversion rates.

By understanding and working on your site’s Core Web Vitals, you can ensure that Google, along with your audience and potential customers, will be able to access easily and benefit from your products and services.
