Attract the Right Job or Clientele:
Do You Feel Sandwiched In The Middle?
Every once in a while, it seems as if we are sandwiched in the middle of sparring parties that puts a halt on pursuing important activities. In some cases, we feel as if our hands are tied, because we are dependent upon the others involved.
For example, someone just advised I “wait” because he still hasn’t heard an answer to a question that was needed to move forward. His advice was returned with a suggestion to follow-up with a call. Luckily, found agreement, otherwise I would have made the call.
Take Control
Allowing matters to get stale is never a good idea. In actuality, when multiple parties are involved, dependency is never really the case. It’s just a convenient excuse. Most matters can be resolved by picking up the phone, sending an email or using online chat. In other words, when it comes to important matters, never allow yourself to feel sandwiched in the middle. On important issues, take control for getting the definitive answers you need. Of course, diplomacy helps.
Miscommunication
On occasion, it is best to retrace steps with all parties involved to learn where the miscommunication occurred. By so doing, rather than walking away angry, you will find a common ground and a better way to proceed. Another example is that of the occasion when services are not delivered as promised. Instead of saying, “oh well”, and agreeably losing the invested money, investigate where the matter was dropped.
For example, just yesterday, frustration was expressed regarding a lack of customer care. It got to the point where a refund was requested. Note, a friendly ask was made for the refund, it was not demanded. Due to the calm style of the request, the provider stepped up by offering to help complete the entire process that would otherwise have been my responsibility, and, they offered to do so at no extra charge. This was worth more to me than the actual upfront fee originally paid.
Multiple Parties Can Give Way to Feeling Sandwiched In The Middle
In the case where several people are involved, be certain to begin a documentation trail. Save all correspondence and refer back to it when necessary. In the case of those employed, using this strategy for communication with management will keep everything above board, and may be used when you have your annual review as proof that you met and exceeded requirements.
Relationships
All communication boils down to nurturing relationships. Another example is that of needing receipt of a document from a number of people. Rather than demanding they return the authorized document ASAP, it was suggested that the recent holiday confused matters and to please send within 24 hours. Everyone agreed the holiday got in the way and returned what was needed in the moment.
