Time to Slow Down to Relieve Stress and Focus On Goals 

Today was an eye-opener signaling that it’s time to slow down and focus on goals to help relieve stress. Before me are many very time-consuming tasks to complete before I am able to promote my new project. My head was spinning thinking about recreating a newsletter system, developing groups to approach along with their preferred style of communication, and allowing enough time for others to assist me in actual promotion.

Focus On Goals 

Normally, I advise to set long-term goals and work backwards to the point you know day by day what needs to be done to accomplish them in a timely fashion.

Pros and Cons of Delay

Bingo! It occurred to me that if I would allow myself a few extra weeks to complete all of those tasks first, instead of rushing the process, the end result will be far superior. The choice could be compared to breadcrumbs versus a french baguette.

The next a-ha moment came when my decision to wait was made and I could feel the stress instantly fading away. Never before have I suggested to postpone a due date to focus on goals at hand.

Improved News

The good news is my envisioned goal will now be easily achieved. Not only will all of the pieces be in place, but they will all be working synchronously together. It’s almost akin to a machine with wheels and gears operating as one for the final output.

Dealing with Pressure

You, too, may be facing a deadline or need to get a product out of the door. The questions to ask yourself are:

  • Is adhering to the original deadline reasonable?
  • Will the quality of the work live up to expectations?
  • Will the rush to deliver produce a happy clientele?

Sell the Delay

Should any of your answers be “no” particularly the last two, give thought to requesting or announcing a delayed deadline. If you report to anyone, then explain the following:

  • Your vision for delivering excellence
  • The pieces of the puzzle required to ensure your vision of excellence.
  • Where you are in the process currently and what remains to be done
  • Why you believe your request is reasonable and the other person should too.

Make your requested delay within a reasonable timeframe. Most likely, it will be approved when the other party recognizes it is to their benefit, too.  This is the key to successful negotiation.

Focus on Goals to Witness the Result You Desire

Your duty now becomes to complete the project as promised and with your vision in mind. By the time it is delivered, anticipation will be high on the receiving end.
