Do You Model A Strong Work Culture

Note: Corey Doane-Chheang provides today’s guest Blog, ‘How to Increase Productivity with a Walking Lunch.’

Corey is a Senior Content Marketing Specialist for Siege Media. She advises that employee wellbeing is key when it comes to healthy work culture. We all know we’re more productive when we take breaks throughout the day, but have you ever thought of combining exercise into those breaks? It can be hard to schedule a walk alone with a busy schedule. However, taking a walking lunch can be just what you need to get some movement in during your workday.

A side benefit is that the time alone allows our minds to wander, reflect, and realize a better approach upon our return to work. While some may believe it to be a waste of time, the opposite proves true when we act upon what we realize is to come next. Enjoy the Infographic and read the tips below for you to discover how to increase productivity with a walking lunch.

4 Benefits of a Lunchtime Walk
How to Increase Productivity:

Aside from the much-needed break away from your desk, taking a walking lunch has a ton of benefits. Whether you’re working from home or back in the office, here are some of the many reasons why taking a walking lunch can be beneficial.

  1. Increases concentration.

We all know how hard it can be to concentrate when you’ve hit that midday slump, but a walking lunch could do just the trick. One study found that those who took a walking lunch experienced higher concentration levels and lower strain in the afternoon.

  1. Improves communication.

Since a walking lunch can increase your concentration and alertness, it can also help you reset and recharge. In the process, you can improve your communication and handle workplace conversations and encounters with ease.

  1. Enhances creativity.

Have you ever had one of those days where you’re in a creative rut and can’t think clearly? We’ve all been there. Many studies have shown that walking outside helps spark creative thinking and new ideas. So when you’re starting to feel that brain fog creeps in, take it outdoors to clear your head.

  1. Boosts your mood.

Don’t have time to take a complete 30-minute lunch walk? That’s okay because 10 minutes is all you need! Research shows that walking for just 10 minutes can boost your mood and happiness level.

8 Workday Productivity Tips to Improve Your Day

Besides a walking lunch, there are many other ways you can stay productive through your workday. Here are a few tips for how to increase productivity and make your day at work more efficient.:

  1. Revise your to-do list as you realize how to improve productivity.

Writing down your tasks and goals each day can help you stay organized and on top of your workload. Whether using an app or writing down your to-dos on a piece of paper, the satisfaction of checking things off your list will also help keep you motivated

  1. Make time for heads downtime

Emails and notifications can easily distract you from getting projects done. Instead, focus on the task at hand to achieve it more proficiently. To avoid the back and forth of checking your email and messages:

  1. Block out chunks of time for the work.
  2. Silence your phone, close your email tab, put headphones in, and update your status on your chat.
  3. Be completely distraction-free when working through tedious projects
  4. Get organized

Aside from making a to-do list to stay organized, you’re going to want a clean and organized office space too. Clutter doesn’t do anything for our productivity. A study from Harvard found that people surrounded by clutter and chaos had a more challenging time performing the task than those sitting at a neat desk. If you have a habit of keeping papers and other office supplies scattered around your desk, make an effort to tidy up during your breaks. Doing so can help you focus, so the clutter doesn’t become a distraction.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Sometimes we want to figure things out independently but waste much time trying to do so. Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions when you need help. The time you spend trying to figure something out can probably receive a quick answer from one of your colleagues who’s willing to lend a helping hand.

  1. Get small tasks done first.

Ever have those small and sometimes annoying tasks that you end up pushing til the end of the day? Prioritize getting those done first and all at once. Learn to leave more time for more significant projects that need more of your attention.

  1. Get a good night’s sleep.

Being productive during the workday can be challenging if you’re tired from the night before. Make sure you stick to a good bedtime routine that will help you relax and unwind at night before getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Your body and workload will thank you when you walk into the office feeling refreshed.

  1. Take more small breaks.

Yes, a walking lunch can do just the trick, but small breaks are just as necessary throughout the day. Zoning in on work for hours on end may seem productive, but that can lead to mental exhaustion. In turn, it may lead to productivity issues. Sometimes a mental pause for even just five to 10 minutes can be just what you need to keep your mind sharp.

  1. Plan tomorrow today.

Make a list of tasks and goals to target what you need to get done. If you want to take it up a notch, try planning out your day in time blocks and stick to them. Make sure to block off time for your walking lunch and mental breaks, too! Make a to-do list for the following day at the end of your workday. The goal is to enter the office focused and ready to tackle the day ahead.
