Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  

Read “The Worst Way to Sell” to Improve Results

Perhaps it’s the new style of selling, prematurely selling prior to knowing about a person is the best way to kill a sale, from my perspective.  How would anyone know what you might want or need prior to getting to know you or doing some research of your work?  This style is particularly prevalent on social media sites.  Job seekers may apply the guidelines below as they reach out to recruiters and companies.

Schedule A Call

One of the more popular approaches is to blast an email to many with the offer to immediately schedule a no fee 15-minute consultation.  While this may seem generous, most of these offers do not pertain to the needs of a general population.  The biggest problem with this approach is that it makes a variety of erroneous assumptions. 

Two recent examples:

Offer One

A woman claiming to have age on her side said she could mentor me to achieve anything I desire. 

Problem:

I’m about the same age, and more importantly, I teach how to set and achieve goals in record time.  I could probably teach her how to do the same.  Her message was deleted.

Offer Two: 

Call me immediately, so I can get you on the right path for finding a lifetime partner.  The problem is with building sound relationships and I’ll teach you how this is done.

Problem

I’ve been happily married for a very long time.  My reply back was that I could probably be on his advisory committee.  Adding to the irony is that the words “Building Relationships that Get Results” comprise the subtitle of my international best-selling book.  He obviously did zero research before asking to sell to me.

 

Improved Approach

Rather than blast a message to many with a strong possibility of annoying most, it is far better to approach people, one by one, but with having done some research first, and asking questions second.  In this way, you eliminate the erroneous assumptions upfront.

Should you be connecting online, reach out to connect and explain what motivated your interest to ask.  Brief communication is fine, but there needs to be a feeling of commonality.  Once the other party agrees to connect, then ask if there would be interest to have a conversation in order to learn more about one another’s work.  Doing so omits the one-sided approach which does not perform well at all.  The interest should be a two-way street, with a sincere desire to help one another.
