Attract the Right Job or Clientele: Stand Tall to See the Path

As a group populates, some people prove to be more popular than others.  For those who are less aggressive, they take it as their signal to leave as those other folks appear to dominate. But is this really the right action to take?

We each have a unique gift awaiting discovery
My Story

It was previously written that for months, I was trying to figure out where I might possibly fit into a room of highly accomplished people. Eventually the spot became evident. But this was due solely to the fact that I stayed the course. I refused to quit the group until a definitive answer was found.

Once the answer was recognized, I did speak up. People listened and took notes. The result made both the uncertainty and waiting period well-worthwhile.

Another friend encountered a similar situation.  Standing on the opposite side of thought, he only attended one meeting. Not feeling appreciated and possibly snubbed by another, this person chose to not return. We had a discussion following that decision.

A sales technique is to not advise, but ask questions.  This helps the person to discover on their own the best way to to proceed. So I posed these:

  • Do you see the vision of the group becoming reality and worthwhile?
  • Do you believe you could contribute in some way?
  • Do you feel bold enough to give the group due consideration in order to take control of the decision rather than others to decide for you?

The point of those questions was to indicate we should never allow others to make decisions for us or allow them to make us feel shut out. Instead, I suggested the following:

  • Give the group one more try
  • Be polite to the people who behave as if they are superior
  • Seek out the friendlier people in the room to find your niche
Your Story

A good rule of thumb is to spend time where we are appreciated. But there are always exceptions to the rule. On the occasion an opportunity arises, a number of people may be vying for the same spot. The situation can become tenuous at best. The question becomes how will you handle future similar occurrences?

Take time to reflect on past behavior and whether there is room for improvement by answering these questions:

  • Have you ever relinquished control to someone else over an important decision?
  • Were you sorry that you did?
  • Do you believe the end result may have been more favorable had you taken control?

Should you detect any sign that the outcome could have improved by seeing it through to the end, make a vow to do better in the future. Speak up to be Heard!  You will find this works well for personal, career and business endeavors.  By adding to the pool of opinions and ideas, you practice the art of negotiation and collaboration too.  In the end, the initial obstacles make each of us much stronger when we are willing to fix what is not right and improve upon our talent.
