When Does the Meeting Officially End?
The above question was recently asked of me on an interview. The obvious answer is when both parties agree it’s over – whether it be a job interview or a prospective meeting for a sale.
However, exceptions seem to be the rule and one should be aware of extenuating circumstances. Prior to any conclusion of a conversation and leaving the room, be certain to recap the remaining steps and timeline for getting it all done. Another factor to consider is that sometimes the other party will love to talk about sports, plans for the weekend, family – you name it. If you are the seller whether for job credentials or services, you need to listen and attentively interact. Should this be the case, find a comfortable point where you may leave without a twinge of guilt and cheerfully remind the person when you will be back in touch.
Also prior to walking out of the room, ask for any last thoughts or requests. Provide assurances you will follow the agenda that was agreed upon by both of you. A wise move is to handwrite a thank you note for their time. This is very old-fashioned, and rarely done, so you will stand out as a beacon of light. In addition, send a thank you email for a quicker appreciative response.
All of these tips serve to further build the relationship and should lead you to a very Smooth Sale!
