How Do You Value Your Talent?
There are so many ways in which to value your talent. This applies to advancing your career, negotiating a new job offer, or setting a rate for services as an entrepreneur. In fact, the process for determining your value is similar to securing a sale.
Build credibility first and then sell value.
My Story
Prior to meeting with corporate clients, I always advise to research the website in detail. And learn as much as possible about the executive team. Read up on their industry and how the company rates among their competitors. Next, read up on the top competitors in the industry. For added knowledge, compare the competitive company clientele list with that of the company you are about to visit.
Having done all of the above in my corporate sales career, my clientele was imprssed as were hiring managers. The homework ahead of time put me ahead of all of my own competitors. In turn, I was able to command higher fees for the products and services that I was selling.
Job Search Example: Value Your Talent
My friend, “Steve” interviewed with a number of companies. He did all of the above and “sold” the caliber of his expertise on interviews. When it came to announcing the desired salary, Steve asked for a very high amount. But it didn’t end there. He wisely lined up a number of interested interviewing companies, did his homework for each, and was able to convey that other high offers were coming forth. The negotiation included the benefits package. By the time it was all over, Steve received a remarkable offer from the company where he most desired to work.
Entrepreneurial Example
In the early stage of entrepreneurship, it was expected that services be given away for free in order to build credibility. But there comes a point in time, no one can afford to continue down this path.

Have you reached your limit of giving services away for free?
If this is carried on for too long, the bills mount and business will need to be left behind. And if you are afraid to negotiate on job interviews, lower salaries are offered providing little cushion for building up a monetary safety net.
If you wish to build value into the service you provide, create a nicely designed postcard with your best tips. But the way in which to build credibility, that produces referrals and testimonials, is to charge a fee that is fair to all (including yourself) and deliver on and possibly beyond the expectations of your clientele.
Working as outlined above will produce loyal clients who see the value in your work. Even better, they will refer you to their peers. This is how you achieve the Smooth Sale!
