Are you in “it” just for the money?

Today’s question applies to job-seekers, entrepreneurs and salespeople. When you agree to something simply because it sounds lucrative, unless you are desperate for the money, my advice is to reconsider all aspects of the idea. There is a strong likelihood you will be disappointed.

Jonathan shared he had an unbelievably wonderful job offer – monetarily that is. In today’s awful economy he would have raised his salary by 50% – almost unheard of in any economy. Upon questioning, he slowly revealed that required travel would sacrifice his social life, a long commute was in the forecast, and he would be working solitary at home most of the time . The picture Jonathan painted reminded me of the movie starring Michael Douglas, “Solitary Man”.

I was depressed just listening to Jonathan describe his latest “opportunity”. However, I’m one to say avoid nay-sayers. So instead of emphatically yelling, “Don’t do it!”, I asked questions about his “must-haves” and prioritized list. After a while, it was clear that while the money was good it wasn’t enough. Jonathan turned down the offer and wrote that he had a great night’s sleep proving to himself he made the right decision.

In all of your endeavors, when you are trying to attract the right prospect, client, sale or increase business development – you have to have a prioritized list for what you want and will accept. Next you must clearly and politely communicate what you want. Keep your mindset focused on your “Must-have” and “Don’t need” lists. Walk away from rude people, those without integrity, or those who are just out to grab the best from you with intent to then leave you behind.

As it turns out, a new and better opportunity popped up for Jonathan as he declined the first. It now appears he is headed for a Smooth Sale!
