Special Requests Are A Type of Proposal

Long ago, in my career, I was able to make a special request prior to signing the agreement to work for a company.  For example, one year we had a special anniversary trip planned.  The Sales Director said, “Just authorize the agreement and I’ll get it done for you.”  There was no doubt in my mind he would, and he did.

Today, however, I’m hearing stories of where verbal agreements both on behalf of employees and entrepreneurs are not being taken seriously.  In fact, in some cases, down the road, the agreements are denied ever having been spoken about.  What to do?

Treat any important agreement you need as a proposal.  Put the agreement in writing, particularly if it will affect income whether employed or an entrepreneur.  The first thing this does is show the other party you are serious.  Read the short paragraph(s) out loud.  Gain agreement.  Then ask for a signature on the dotted line.  Provide a copy to the other person and save a copy for yourself.  When it comes to agreement, it’s a good idea to have an electronic folder on your computer available for easy access and continued documentation.

My wish is that everyone will honor their word, but unfortunately that’s not the case.  However, when we each take ownership to do so, we build a positive personal brand, build business well, and enjoy the  Smooth Sale!
