This past week was a huge eye-opener.  I naively thought that by the time an entrepreneur reaches a million dollar business their sleepless nights would be long gone.  But according to four separate conversations that took place in 7 days, I realized nothing could be further from the truth.

The one thing these entrepreneurs all had in common is they are product driven with services being secondary.  At times they face back order delays, late payments, and the need to still pay for warehousing although no product may exist for the moment.  Their worry becomes how to make payroll and meet expenses.

Further conversation conveyed that some entrepreneurs become anxious to “make it” and so they hire too many people too quickly so their ROI is greatly diminished.  One person said she prefers to hire a virtual assistant with the specific skill set needed at the particular point in time to deliver precisely what the client needs rather than hiring a full time employee requiring a need to generalize the service.

It’s apparent the prioritization of your own wants, needs and desires considering all ramifications need to be explored before proceeding with major investments.  These scenarios also made me wonder if an entrepreneurship would be better off focusing on services first and products second to avoid getting caught with a cash-flow imbalance.  I’m certain there is no perfect answer.  But when your mindset is focused on your bottom line, you will do a whole lot better than aimlessly trying to build business.

The same may be said about finding prospects for job interviews.  Introspection of your current situation and where you wish to be headed will determine which job opportunity will be best and where to focus your time spent.  Once your know the answers, it’s easy to market and communicate precisely what you want and build relationships with the right prospects.
