When in Doubt – Apologize!

In our hurried world, it’s almost a given each of us will make an error in judgment, timeliness, or simply forget to act.  It’s a two way-street.  When I am the one who made the error, I quickly apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused and ask forgiveness.  Given this is the case, when others forget or miss an appointment, I am quick to say it happens to the best of us and agree to reschedule.

Apologies are another aspect of building your personal brand as well as relationships in the making.  The outcome is people recognize you are easy to work with making them more inclined to provide you new opportunities and refer you to those they know.  Your business depends upon this policy; be forgiving and apologize when it’s your turn to do so.

Today, two different people emailed me asking why I was late in responding.  One was in regard to submitting answers to questions for a magazine and the other was for an interview.  Hallelujah, neither instance was due to my error this time around!  In regard to the magazine, I searched email but could not find the questions and sent a short note stating so.  “Nancy” replied back that it was her error, apologized and sent the questions via another server.  On the other hand, “George” did not own up to he forgot to account for the difference between our time zones.  We eventually did reschedule.

Reading those two scenarios, which type of person would you rather work with?  You get the point!  Treating others as equals and as human will keep you on the wave of the Smooth Sale!
