Making the Most of Delays

Many times we are faced with an old saying, “Hurry up and wait”!  This can be very annoying and get our frame of mind on the wrong path for the day.  People may show late to meetings, your mode of transportation may have had a breakdown, or the freeway is at a dead stop.  How you handle the situtation will greatly influence the outcome for better or worse.

When someone is very late for an appointment (as in past 10 minutes) it becomes disrespectful as I was taught.  However, when they do show, greet them with a smile.  There might be a very good explanation.  By being kinder and gentler about the situation, you will put your meeting on a more solid footing and the other party will relax more to hear what you have to say and potentially be more inclined to do business with you.

Upon delays in getting somewhere, if you are the one to have an appointment pull over to let the other party know you will be late.  They will be very appreciative by the time you show up.  If you are taking public transportation, use the time to catch up on things you were meaning to do or at least make notes in your smart phone.  And when stuck on the freeway, listen to calming music or have a fun conversation should someone be stuck in the car with you.

By the time you arrive at your destination and greet others, you will be headed for a Smooth  Sale!
