Avoid These Errors to Improve Communication
Errors are frequently made in how we communicate with others. Rather than beating oneself up for the mistake, it’s best to learn from those who have “been there”.
Etiquette stands behind all well-received communication. The best approach for getting on the right footing is to picture yourself in the other person’s shoes. Consider how you would react to the how and what was communicated. Part two of excellence in communication requires recognition of when to use private versus open communication in order to not annoy the very people with whom you are attempting to build business.
Being the leader of a networking group may require email be sent to all members. However, some may have little time for group news due to a time crunch or privacy issues. These folks will quickly “unsubscribe”.
Instead of blasting email to everyone, each and every time, consider these options:
- Privately message the person or people you believe will be interested
- Invite the entire group to enjoy an open forum on one of the social media platforms.
Respecting privacy is fundamental for continuing to build relationships and a strong network.
Sharing
Prior to an actual distribution, agreement to share the information should be obtained. Mistakenly sharing information without prior consent, may poorly affect the personal brand of all those involved. Sensitive information about a company, a proposal, or information that contains something of a personal nature should remain private to protect the person who provided it. Once everyone is comfortable with the arrangement, then seek agreement to share with the remainder of the group.
Social Group
Upon having developed a large group, and one whereby everyone wishes to share news, it is advisable to develop a social group on one of the social media sites. Otherwise, email becomes overwhelming. LinkedIn is one of the more popular sites for business activity. Through registration, members are automatically giving their consent to share news. Most often excellent insights are shared where everyone willingly contributes, making this a well worthwhile effort.
Selling and Interviewing Require the Opposite
The one appropriate instance where keeping everyone in the loop via email and other communication methods is that of selling into a larger company. When you are interviewing with multiple people or selling to a larger company that has a team involved to make the buying decision, everyone involved should be included in all of the communication. In this manner, no one is offended as everyone is treated with equal importance.
