Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Do You Take Responsibility at the Right Time?

Have you noticed over time that some people voluntarily put themselves out on behalf of others while others almost seem to go into hiding? The question becomes how did selecting one path over another affect their careers and businesses?

My Story

As a salesperson, one would never succeed if calls weren’t made, or if followup on promises weren’t kept. It became second nature to initiate what needed to be done in order to move forward.

I believe that sales trained me to become more thoughtful of others. This is true in striving to understand varying opinions, finding agreement through friendly negotiation, and taking responsibility when an error is made.

Charlie and Anne’s Story

This is a combined story given the circumstances were very similar. A week ago, both Charlie and Anne separately provided me with incorrect payment information. Yet they each insisted it was my duty to correct the problem. In order to avoid angry communication and regret it later, I simply elected to resolve the situations myself. But in my estimation they dodged responsibility that was theirs.

Deborah’s Story

The two of us have a working arrangement where Deborah alerts me to specific opportunities. Upon receiving one today, I noticed a form to be filled out and submitted. The information requested was strictly on my end. Accustomed to taking charge, I filled the form out and submitted it without thinking twice.

Deborah was then notified in a thank you email that the heads up was appreciated and the form submitted. It turned out she was shocked! In all of her previous dealings, I’m the only one who ever took responsibility for submission. Everyone else she represents said it was her job, and not theirs.

This incident, particularly after that of last week, had me laughing hard. I also wonder if there isn’t a happy medium somewhere in taking responsibility.

Your Story

The biggest problem seen with salespeople and entrepreneurs is the lack of follow-up or checking in with prospective clientele. Where do you sit on the meter rating for taking charge of situations?  Are you comfortable checking in about a hiring process for the job you want, or with a prospective client to see if they are ready to move forward? This is the starting point for taking responsibility.

The next step is to volunteer to fix problems that may arise. Your willingness to take charge will define an admirable personal brand for you.  In the end, taking responsibility at the right time usually leads to the Smooth Sale!
