Salespeople are taught to add new prospective clients daily to their sales funnel in order to always have your pipeline overflowing with possibility and sales flowing through. The same may be said for almost any endeavor.
A pipeline overflowing with possibility is essential in order to ensure success.
The same principle holds true for job seekers looking for their next place of employment. Simply contacting a couple of places per week or month will producer v-e-r-y s-l-o-w results.
George is Breaking All Records for Job Interviews:
George enjoyed the freedom of entrepreneurship for a year. The ups and downs as well as uncertainty had him recognizing that he was better suited for a corporate career.
Although an engineer, George is familiar with some sales practices. He spoke to friends and past colleagues about the companies where they believe he would be a good fit. He asked for introductions. At the same time, George began listing the companies that most interested him along with appropriate recruiters who could help to get him in the door. The list grew into a long one.
The end result was George lined up an unheard of 3-5 interviews per day for the past two weeks. A couple of companies have advanced him to the third and fourth interview stage. There is no doubt that by mid-December George will have at least one offer for one of the desired jobs.
Sales Strategies for Interviewing
- Fill the pipeline as George did.
Begin calling each one by one. As you connect, refine the list to showcase the best matched possibilities. - Weigh out the pros and cons of each offer.
There is no perfect job. Therefore, have a list of priorities in place to further refine your list. - Review the offers.
The two top priorities usually speak to compensation and career path. Match them as closely as possible to your priorities. - Negotiate the Offers.
Most often the offers become a game of ping pong. A less than expected offer will be provided. It’s your duty to ask for more. Dependent upon the job, a variety of topics may include salary, expense account, mileage, vacation days, sick time, and/or bonuses. - Company Culture
While all of the elements of the offer need to be examined, another very important one is the culture of the company. Ask to speak with employees and observe people in action. Determine if you will look forward to going to work each day.
