Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Increase Sales but Don’t Kill Them Off!

It’s excruciating for me to be the buyer when the seller is so misguided, hence the Blog title, ‘increase sales but don’t kill them off!’ In case you are fairly new at selling the professional world or it’s a new concept for you given your entrepreneurial startup, here are a few basic reminders of how to deal with prospective clients.

Budget

It’s a tremendous waste of time to have a conversation about a high priced service when your prospect only has a modest amount to spend. The best way to approach the subject is to ask the following questions:

  • What caught your attention to speak with me today?
  • How do you see this potentially helping you or your company?
  • We have a number of offerings to help you; what is your budget so that I may tailor what we have to what you need?

LISTEN

Invariably a question will spontaneously be asked of you. Stop mid-sentence if need be to answer the question. The client will be annoyed if you don’t. Proceeding as if you are in a hurry, don’t care, or can’t disrupt your script will have people getting up and leaving the meeting.

Your agenda is less important than that of the client. By understanding the client’s concerns, you greatly increase the likelihood of getting the sale.

Ask for Questions

Most often your conversation or presentation contains “sections” of information. At the end of each, section pause to ask for questions. Inquire as to how they see what you are proposing will benefit them. Let the person answer in full.

Ask for Hesitations

  • Do you have any concerns?
  • What remaining questions do you have?
  • Are you ready to get started?

Big Companies:

  • What is your timeline for making a decision?
  • Will anyone else be involved in the decision making process?
  • If so, may we all meet together so that I can give a thorough explanation and answer questions as I just did for you?

Not Now

Smile, and ask is this not now forever or will there be a better time to check in with you? This question usually produces a sigh of relief and willingness to give you a new date and time to reconvene.

Follow-up

Follow-up is the key to making more sales. If you don’t you obviously lose the time spent as well as the sale. And if you do follow-up be casual and remind the person they asked you to. Ask to exchange updates to better understand where they are at and to help them even better than before.
